Brenda Lou Hughes, age 81, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Stanton Nursing & Rehab Center in Stanton, Kentucky. She was born on Saturday, December 16, 1944, in Winchester, Kentucky, to the late Daniel Boone Skidmore and the late Elsie Arnold Skidmore. Brenda was a talented beautician who owned her own shop, Brenda's Cut and Curl. She also worked as a secretary at Bowen Elementary School, where her warm personality made her a favorite among students. In addition, Brenda served as a Migrant Aide for the Powell County Board of Education, helping those in need. She had a passion for sewing, crafting, and painting, often bringing her creative visions to life. During the holiday season, Brenda's home became a festive haven filled with decorations. She cherished camping trips with her late husband, Danny, her sister Donna Sue, and her late brother-in-law, Shirley Gay, creating lasting memories. Fishing and hunting for treasures at yard sales were among Brenda's favorite pastimes, as well as nurturing her vibrant flower garden. Music was another love of hers, and she often accompanied her husband to performances at Renfro Valley. Known for her quick wit and strong opinions, Brenda was a champion for the underdog, earning the adoration of children at school with her caring and supportive nature. In addition to her parents, Brenda is preceded in death by her husband, Danny Edward Hughes; one son, Ricky Lynn Boswell; and two brothers, James Edwin Skidmore and Paul Skidmore. She is survived by two sons: Millard "Cherrio" Boswell and Robert Shawn Bailey, both of Stanton; three daughters: Melinda (Allen) Moore, Kathy Thacker, and Brittany Frymyer, all of Stanton; one brother, Millard Keith Skidmore; one sister, Donna Sue Crabtree; ten grandchildren: Josh (Christine) Nolan, Chelsea (Brandon)Toler, Daniel Boswell, Megan Boswell, Ryan Thacker, Brooklyn Williams, Rebecca Boswell, Rebecca Ann Hughes, Brittney Morton, and Boone Bailey; a special great-grandchild, Bailey Frymyer; and many other great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at Hearne Funeral Home, 125 West College Avenue, Stanton, Kentucky. Funeral services, officiated by Wesley Hale, will be held at the funeral home at 12:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 19, 2026. Burial will be held at Skidmore Cemetery in Stanton, Kentucky, with Millard "Cherrio" Boswell, Robert Shawn Bailey, Millard Keith Skidmore, Boone Bailey, Dean Hall, Brandon Crabtree, Jaime Wilcox, and Bradley Wilcox serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Billie Long, Juanita King Benningfield, Patty Brown, J.L. Bowen, and Kyle Pence. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hearne Funeral Home of Stanton.
